Imagine a whole room full of things to see, touch, do and learn. The Discovery Room is just such a place! Four themes are explored over the course of the school year. To enhance each theme we use artifacts, puppets, puzzles, dress-up costumes and more! Museum staff, with the assistance of the teacher, lead these interactive programs. Before or after your Discovery Room visit, plan to tour one of the Museum’s galleries with our 30-minute teacher-led activity designed to complement the program.
MY COMMUNITY
In My Community students will identify some of the roles and responsibilities they have as members of a community. They will discover the unique characteristics of urban and rural communities and learn how these two types of community differ from each other. Through role-play at a pioneer home and school, students will also discover that communities change over time.

Discover how plants and animals awaken to Spring! Students can match birds to their nests; look for insects camouflaged in their environment; observe live insects and other creatures; learn about weather; and plant a garden with a variety of seeds and bulbs. NUMBERS IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD
In our Discovery Room "town" students will investigate, through hands-on activities, how people use mathematics for everyday activities. At the Market, students will weigh foods and sort them into Canada’s Food Groups. At our Post Office, they will learn about stamps, weigh and measure letters and deliver the mail too! At the Museum station, they will collect, sort and pair different articles. At the Construction Site, they will use tools, practise estimation, recognize shapes and build a model house. Before or after your Discovery Room visit, take your students on our teacher-led scavenger hunt activity to measure, count and find shapes around the Museum.

PREHISTORIC PALS
Discover creatures from Alberta's past! Learn about dinosaurs and Ice Age mammals! Students can participate in a paleontology dig to uncover real bones; assemble a Woolly Mammoth skeleton; dress-up as a Sabre-toothed Cat or Ankylosaurus; compare animal tracks; and examine, close-up, real dinosaur bones. Before or after your Discovery Room visit, take your class on a teacher-led tour through our fossil gallery Fossils! Creatures from the Depths of Time to look for carnivores and herbivores.
