Field Trip Q and A's

  1. What is a school group?

    Students in kindergarten through grade 12 from a school registered with Alberta Education. Students from a University or College or an English as Second Language facility registered with Alberta Education. Children with a homeschooler registered with Alberta Education (proof of registration must be shown at the Museum Admission Desk).

  2. How and when can I book my class?

    Your reservation must be made at least three weeks in advance. For booking and information, contact the School & Group Booking Coordinator. Print the booking form and either call, fax or email the information to the Museum booking office. After you have made your booking, watch for the arrival of your confirmation. If you have not heard from us at least one week prior to your requested booking date, call us to make sure your booking is confirmed.

  3. How much will my school group pay?

    Refer to the individual Program or Grade Level Descriptions for details.

    Please Note: The School Program Flat Rate Policy states that groups of 13 or less will be charged a flat rate of $50 for guided tours, Discovery Room programs and all interpretive programs. Where the number of accompanying adults exceeds the specified ratio of adults to students for a given program, each additional adult will be charged half the regular admission rate. There is no charge for teachers and teacher aids.

  4. How many chaperones can I bring?

    Refer to individual Program or Grade Level Descriptions for details. For Self-conducted Programs we require: Pre-school and Kindergarten - 1 adult for every 4 students + teacher(s); Grades 1,2, 3 - 1 adult for every 5 students + teacher(s); Grades 4,5,6 - 1 adult for every 8 students + teacher(s); Grades 7 to 12 - 1 adult for every 10 students including teacher(s).

  5. How do I pay?

    Program fees must be paid on arrival. The Museum accepts: cash, cheques (payable to: Royal Alberta Museum), credit cards (MC or Visa) or debit cards. The Museum does not accept Mammoth Passes, Friends Memberships or Site Passes for tours or school programs. Schools will not be invoiced.

  6. When do I arrive for my school program?

    Please plan to arrive 10 minutes before your program begins. Also allow 10-15 minutes at the end of the program in order to organize your class before departure.

  7. What should we bring?

    PENCILS. Students participating in an Interpretive or Self-conducted Program receive workbooks to record answers and observations. If staying for lunch, try to have your students' lunches in boxes labeled with your school's name. Remember to reserve a lunchroom when booking.

    NAME TAGS. Interpreters enjoy being able to address students by name.

  8. How can I prepare for a Field Trip?

    Teachers booking for our Discovery Room, Interpretive Programs and Guided Tours will receive a teacher's manual that will provide background information, pre- and post-visit activities and trip planning information. Teachers receive free admission to exhibits for class preparation. Simply show your teacher identification at the Museum Admission Desk on arrival. Call us before your visit if you wish to have an education section staff person talk with you when you arrive.

  9. What additional resources I can use?

    Learn about the Royal Alberta Museum, curriculum activities and upcoming exhibitions by visiting www.RoyalAlbertaMuseum.ca

    Teacher In-Services: We can provide in-services on Social Studies topics relating to Aboriginal culture or Science topics relating to natural history themes. Cost will vary based on the in-service being offered.

  10. What if I need to cancel my booking?

    Please notify the School & Group Booking Coordinator.

    Cancellations must be received in writing (letter, fax or e-mail) at least two business days prior to your scheduled field trip or your school will be charged a $50 cancellation fee. Field trips cancelled with less than two business days notice due to inclement weather or other unforeseeable circumstances may be rescheduled without penalty. The Museum will send a confirmation of your cancellation. If you do not receive this please notify us as soon as possible.

  11. Do you have First Aid at the Museum?

    The Museum has staff trained in First Aid on site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Security staff is prepared to perform First Aid for all visitors including school groups. They are to be informed if any First Aid is administered in the Museum.

  12. How do we get to the Museum and where can we park our bus?

    Royal Alberta Museum is located at 12845-102 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta.

    Bus parking is available on the east side of the Museum parking lot.

  13. Do I need a booking to visit special feature exhibitions?

    Yes, a booking to see a feature exhibition must be made at least three weeks in advance through the Museum's Booking Office.
