Edukits

The Royal Alberta Museum offers these travelling kits to let you bring some of the Museum into your classroom; kits come with hands-on objects, images and information for students & teachers.

Grade 1-4: Looking Back

This Edukit is full of hands-on items, photographs and stories (told by four children) of life in Edmonton circa 1905. As well as its strong ties to the social studies curriculum, the Edukit holds many cross-curricular opportunities. The accompanying Teacher's Manual has background information about Edmonton's early days and suggested classroom activities.

Curriculum:

Duration: 1 week rental period. Edukits must be picked up and returned to the Museum.

Cost: $30 per week plus $30 damage deposit due upon pick-up.

Grade 2: I Am Canadian: Inuit

Meet the people of Canada's far north. This Edukit contains hands-on materials, stories, and information about everyday life in the north, both past and present. The accompanying Teacher's Manual contains background information and suggested cross-curricular activities. Have your students locate northern communities on a map, play a traditional Inuit game, build an inukshuk or write their names in Inuit syllabics.

Curriculum:

Duration: 1 week rental period. Edukits must be picked up and returned to the museum.

Cost: $30 per week plus $30 damage deposit due upon pick-up.

Grade 2: I Am Canadian: Acadian

Meet the Acadians! This Edukit is full of hands-on materials, stories, music and information about the Acadian people of the Maritimes. The accompanying Teacher's Manual contains background information and suggested cross-curricular activities. Students study images of Acadian history, play games, learn about traditional Acadian crafts and hear some lively Acadian music.

Grade 2-4: Journey to Ukraine

Bring Ukraine and its people to life! This Edukit contains information on modern-day Ukraine. Topic areas include arts and crafts, celebrations, traditions, history and much more! It includes activities, audio/visual and hands-on materials to align with the Social Studies curriculum. This Edukit is appropriate for Grades 2, 3 and 4.

Curriculum:
  • Social Studies: General Outcomes 3.1 Communities in the World and 3.2 Global Citizenship

Duration: 1 week rental period. Edukits must be picked up and returned to the museum.

Cost: $30 per week plus $30 damage deposit due upon pick-up.

Grade 3: Passport to Tunisia

Experience the cultural diversity of Tunisia! This Edukit comes complete with information and artifacts to set up four activity centers that explore Geography, Climate, Celebrations, Traditions, Religion, History, Music and Languages. Using the Edukit's audio/visual resources, students will embark on a virtual guided tour of Tunisia. Teacher-led activities are supplemented with a colourful and engaging interactive CD, a storybook created specifically for this Edukit and hands-on items including a lute, Tunisian dinar and a puzzle map which highlights the geography of Tunisia.

Grade 3: Passport to Peru

Explore the cultural heritage of the people of Peru! This Edukit comes with information and artifacts that will allow you to experience a number of aspects of Peruvian culture. Activities and resources related to climate, clothing, music, storytelling, symbols and more make connections between Peru's cultural past and present.

Grade 3: Passport to India

Travel to India and meet the people! This Edukit takes you on an imaginary journey by train around the country. Along the way you will experience India through activities and resources related to recreation, transportation, textiles, music, food and celebration.

Grade 3: Circle of Life

Introduce your students to the life cycles of selected Albertan mammals, birds, insects and amphibians. The Edukit includes a Teacher's Manual, hands-on materials, stories, pictures and a video showing insect metamorphosis.
