Program focus: Peoples and cultures of the Northern Plains, Parkland and Subarctic from ca. 12,000 years ago through the fur trade era. Principal collections: artifacts and faunal (animal bone) remains from archaeological sites across Alberta.

Ethnology
Program focus: First Nations and Métis peoples and cultures of the Northern Plains, Parkland and Subarctic from the mid-1800s to the present. Principal collections: objects of Blackfoot, Cree, Dene, Nakoda, Tsuu T'ina and Métis origin.

Cultural Communities
Program focus: Alberta's diverse ethnic and religious communities. Principal collections: objects from Alberta's Ukrainian, French-Canadian, Norwegian, Japanese, Chinese, and Polish communities, objects associated with Roman Catholic, United Church, Buddhist, Sikh, Muslim and Jewish faiths, and objects from Doukhobor, Hutterite, Mennoite and Russian Old Believer communities.

Military and Political History
Program focus: Alberta's military, political and law enforcement history. Principal collections: historic firearms, military and police uniforms and insignia, objects associated with Alberta political parties and figures and numismatics (military medals, medallions, tokens, coins and paper currency).

Western Canadian History
Program focus: Alberta's social, industrial, domestic and decorative arts history from 1870 to the present. The collections are wide-ranging and diverse, but areas of special strength include costumes and textiles, medical equipment, ceramics and glassware, toys and recreational equipment, communications technology (from radios to computers) and home furnishings.

Conservation
Program focus: Preservation of Human History collections. Specializing in artifact conservation treatment and mounting artifacts for display, environmental monitoring to preserve artifacts from deterioration, and health and safety issues associated with historic objects.
