Distinctive to the species are chestnut sides in most plumages with males exhibiting a yellow crown and white cheek.

The first spring male has black parts that are lighter on the face and the chestnut is not as extended.

The cheeks are grey and the chestnut is reduced.
In spring adult females, the chestnut is reduced as compared to the adult male and the supercillium and subocular crescents are not as bold as they are in the male.
