Black-throated Green Warbler
Dendroica virens
Description
All age groups of this species show yellow in the face with an olive cheek and eyeline, white wingbars and yellow around the vent. The upperparts are olive and the underparts are light with dark streaking on the flanks which extend up to the throat. In the male the throat is quite dark while in the female and hatching year males show greyer throats. The hatching year females' throats do not show any dark areas.
Habitat
The Black-throated
Green Warbler prefers moderately open, mature conifer or mixed conifer-deciduous
forests with some shrubby understorey.
Song
The songs of this bird are distinctive. Early in the breeding season, the male will sing a song with an accented ending, "zee zee zee zoo zee." During territorial events, the male will use a song with an unaccented ending, "zoo zee zoo zoo zee."

Comments
It is more often heard than seen but occasionally one can catch a glimpse of it foraging along the twigs and foliage of conifers for caterpillars and other invertebrates.
The range of this species may have contracted as humans clear the older
growth forests where this bird is normally found.

Distribution
The Black-throated Green Warbler breeds in the boreal forests of Canada and the regions of the Great Lakes. The breeding range includes east-central British Columbia, northern and central Alberta, central Saskatchewan, central and southern Manitoba, central and southern Manitoba, central and southern Ontario, south-central and southern Québec, southern Labrador, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia including Cape Breton Island. |
