The species page is intended to give an overview of the bird. It describes some of the life history and identification features of the bird. The pictures on the right-hand side show various views of birds in different plumages and angles. The small images can be clicked on to replace the large, central image. The map shows the breeding distribution of the species in Canada in red. The base map shows land cover. The distributions were determined through a literature search.

Age classes:
This website uses a scheme that has been developed for use in the identification of age groups in birds by banders and other biologists who handle birds. Below is a table describing what the codes indicate:

SY Second year -indicates bird with spring plumage in their first year following the year of the bird's birth or the first year of the bird as an adult.
ASY After second year -a full adult bird in spring plumage that show signs that it is older than a second year bird.
AHY After hatching year -fall adult birds.
