Theodore Elizabeth Wright Macgillivray accumulated this collection over
the span of 30 years. While she first was attracted to war posters while
living in Vancouver during the First World War, her later travels to France,
Belgium, England, Holland, Germany and South Africa afforded her the opportunity
to develop the collection further. Always willing to share the collection
with others, she frequently displayed the collection to raise funds to benefit
discharged Canadian servicemen. Mrs. Macgillivray's collection was left to her daughter, Elizabeth Coenen of Edmonton. Upon its donation to the the province in 1989, Maurice Doll, Curator of Military & Political History accepted it into that collection and undertook its research and documentation. Realizing the impact of this media he began to plan for a major exhibition of this collection. This richness and diversity brings the exhibition far beyond the message of propaganda, the original intent of the posters. In its own way, it is an art show. However, along with Maurice' Doll's scholarly catalogue it also becomes a vivid and palatable history lesson into some little known facts about Canada's and her allies' wartime production and distribution of war posters.
